I can feel it. Can you? The cooler temperatures begging us in after a long hot summer. Blair commented on the "explore room" post several weeks ago that she much more enjoys the idea of fall cleaning as opposed to spring cleaning. Well I must be the same way. Because cleaning and rearranging is about all I've done the past several weeks. Or at least it feels like it.
You don't want to see photos of my paper piles or dust bunnies, so I thought I'd show you another room in the house that has been re-arranged and organized.
Since we moved in a year ago, Wyatt has been sleeping on a mattress on the floor. He was still rolling off the mattress until very recently. But the time had come to get a big boy bed of his very own. (which coincided nicely with time to give all of our sippy cups to the babies that need them)
Last summer while we were in Texas, my mom and I had spent one whole day junking in Mineral Wells. And sweet Joanne had gifted me a headboard and foot boardthat was leaning against the outside her shop. Yep, that's the very headboard on the far left of the photo. I wasn't sure what I would end up doing with it. It needed a bit of cleaning and a good linseed oil treatment. But it was sturdy so I took it anyway. Now let me stop right there for a minute. I do not want to overlook the lesson in that statement. Let me put in bold for you...If you like it and its cheap (free), take it! You'll eventually find a use for it.
So back to the bed. We used the headboard and floorboard (see a bitter shot of them here) and S made some side rails for them and a few slats for across the two. You know, to keep him from falling through in the middle of the night. Add his jersey cowboy sheets we already had, a few cozy quilts and some pillows from the other boys room. And presto! Wyatt has a new bed.
Which leads to going through all of his board books - donating the ones that are not "big boy" worthy. Which leads to going through the toys, only keeping the ones that big boys play with. Which leads to hanging a few more things on the wall - favorite items his big brothers have made him.
The shelves above his dresser: a robby hobbie doll (did you know there is a little boy version of holly?), his letters painted by Auntie Jamie, a cowboy atlas mug, a few vintage books including Calico the Wonder Horse: The Saga of Stewy Stinker by Virginia Lee Burton and a vintage cowboy lunch tin.
And a day later, Wyatt has his own big boy bed where he can curl up with this blankets and one of his picture books. A space where he can turn inward once in awhile. When big brothers get too rough. When you don't like that mama makes you sit in time out. When the days get a bit too long now that we are in pre-school.
Wyatt, you are such a big boy! And I am so proud of the little person you are. And even more proud that you choose me to be your mama.
