On Thursday we got our CSA allotment from Mattawoman Creek Farms on the Eastern Shore (found via Local Harvest). Included among the bak choy, spinach, onions, curley kale, lettuce and spinach were beets and turnips. I was thrilled.
This time, we decided to have a taste test. We fried one batch in olive oil like we have traditionally done and other batch we baked in the oven. The boys loved the experiment and it was fun watching them try to pick which one they THOUGHT would taste better.
And surprisingly, the baked chips one out unanimously!
Some recipes are handed down generation after generation. And then others just come about. You try something new, something good for your family and happen to get smiles all around. Wallah! A family recipe is born. Such was the way our terra chips recipe happened...recipe to follow in its own post.
We have signed up for the ONE LOCAL SUMMER Challenge.
The challenge began on June 1 and runs until August 31. The challenge is to prepare one meal each week using only locally grown ingredients - the exceptions are oil, salt and pepper, and spices. We are doing pretty well with locally grown fruits and veggies. Between the CSA and our own garden, I think we are set. We now get our eggs from a local woman and I have a source of where to get our milk from a local dairy. The meat department is a tough one for us. Im still working on it.
Looks like spinach omelets for breakfast tomorrow!
Oh, and the lettuces from the CSA were used in salads for me and some girlfriends who happened over for a play date yesterday, the bak choy was sauteed up with some garlic and olive oil last night for dinner. The onions, spinach and kale are calling my name right now. Anyone have a good recipe for kale?
Have a great weekend all!
