The acronyms and codewords that come out of the internet crack me up. FO (finished object) is a new one for me. My lack of awareness on this one is quite possibly because I am not great at bringing projects to a close. My strength is in the planning of projects and getting them started. I spend great brainpower planning each and every detail, and then dive in. However, I am a horrible finisher at times. Something happens along the way...a bad seam that has to be ripped out, a shortage of one supply or another and I give the project a rest and just never get back to it. The sewing room is littered with UFO's (unfinished objects).
I finally snapped out of my "holy-cow-my-family-is-all-together fog" and spent some quite time by myself in the sewing room to finish baby Zoe's quilt. I think it might be a bit of a stretch to call it a quilt even though there is some fabric piecing. Instead of quilting it, I tried to keep it simple and not get too ambitious. I just tacked it together with embroidery thread every few inches or so. The idea was to make it super girly and pink, but soft and practical for the beach or wherever they want to use it. I used three vintage pillowcases opened up and cut in half for the six blocks and then one of the coordinating sheets for the backing. The cutting and piecing was super easy since each pillowcase was a standard size.
But when I got to putting the batting in, what I had purchased was not wide enough. Thanks again Amy for the advice. Without your quick response to my crazed email, this one might have faced a similar fate as so many of my other projects. As Amy suggested, I ended up piecing the batting together to make it wide enough and then just started the tacking along that seam to make sure it would stay together nicely. It worked out really well even after I washed it just to make sure.
(will try to add a photo of the pocket later today, the one I took didn't come out well)
I also added a pocket on one of the corners to hold a matching stuffed stitchette. She has a bell inside her stuffing, which I love, and a ribbon attached to her top so that she stays in the pocket and won't get lost.
This sweet baby blanket/quilt is a FO now. It was the first quilt that has made its way to completion. I have one other that is about half way done. A linen quilt for my cousin's baby that is almost a year old now. (I can't remember now what the balking point was, but I think I just might have the momentum to tackle it again. Maybe by Christmas yours will be done Virginia Grace?
